Dan Culhane Celebrates 20 Years as President & CEO

Dan Culhane Celebrating 20 Year as President

In April 2026, Dan Culhane marked a milestone that few in economic development reach: 20 years leading one organization, one region, and one evolving vision for growth.

When Culhane stepped into the role in 2006, the organization was known as the Ames Chamber of Commerce, with a focused footprint in Story County. Two decades later, it has transformed into the Ames Regional Economic Alliance, reflecting both an expanded geography and a broader, more integrated approach to economic and community development.

That evolution has been deliberate. Over the past ten years alone, the organization has seen measurable growth across nearly every category. Affiliate and contract relationships have nearly quadrupled, growing from five in 2016 to 19 in 2026. The team itself has expanded to 20 professionals, reflecting increased capacity to serve businesses, communities, and regional partners.

Membership has followed a similar trajectory. What stood at 589 members in 2016 has grown to 774 today, a sign of both organizational relevance and a business community that sees value in regional collaboration. Financially, the organization has strengthened its foundation as well, with revenue increasing from just over $2 million in 2016 to $3.87 million in 2026.

But perhaps the most striking figure is the scale of economic development impact. Between 2016 and 2025, the Alliance helped support $2.5 billion in project investment across the region. That number reflects not just deals closed, but relationships built, communities aligned, and long-term strategies executed.

Geographically, the organization’s reach has expanded from serving a single county to representing four: Boone, Greene, Hamilton, and Story. This regional approach culminated in the 2024 rebrand to the Ames Regional Economic Alliance, a name that better reflects both its service area and its mission.

Culhane’s leadership has been shaped by both experience and engagement. A graduate of Iowa State University, he holds credentials as a Certified Chamber Executive and Certified Economic Developer. His professional leadership extends across the state and region, having served as President of the Professional Developers of Iowa and the Mid-America Economic Development Council. He is also a graduate of Leadership Iowa and has contributed to the Institute for Decision Making’s advisory board.

Beyond titles, Culhane has played a role in shaping Iowa’s broader economic landscape. He is a founding member of America’s Cultivation Corridor, an initiative that has elevated the state’s global leadership in agriculture and bioscience.

His commitment to community is just as evident. Over the years, he has served as President of the Iowa State University Letterman’s Club, chaired the United Way of Story County annual campaign, and led efforts like Reggie’s Sleepout. Today, he continues to serve on multiple boards, including the Iowa State University Research Park, the Federal Reserve’s Economic Development Committee, Youth and Shelter Services Foundation, and the Central Iowa Expo.

Through it all, Culhane has maintained a clear focus: building connections that strengthen both the economy and the community. The numbers tell a story of growth, but the underlying theme is consistency of leadership and vision. Congratulations, Dan!
