January 2026 End of Month

End of Month - January 2026

As we wrap up the month, I want to take a moment to reflect on one of the most meaningful gatherings of the year to date for the Ames Regional Economic Alliance: our 2025 Annual Awards celebration. Since 1987, this event has served as more than a ceremony, but as an opportunity to pause, take stock, and recognize people and organizations whose leadership and commitment continue to move our region forward.

Coming together earlier this year, we were reminded that the strength of our region is not confined to a single community. Its vitality is built through collaboration across Boone, Greene, Hamilton, and Story counties, and through the shared efforts of civic, business, and community leaders who understand that progress is strongest when it is regional. The Annual Awards highlight that collective mindset and reinforce why partnership remains at the core of the Alliance’s work.

This year’s honorees truly reflect that spirit. From Northwest Bank, named Business of the Year, to trailblazing entrepreneurs like Shalika Khindurangala of Piece & Freedom Bakery, and innovative leaders such as Mike Schmid of Inside Golf & Games, each recipient is contributing to economic and community outcomes that extend well beyond their own organization. We also celebrated community-centered investments like the Boys & Girls Clubs of Story County’s Community Project of the Year and a diverse group of Economic Impact Award recipients whose efforts demonstrate both vision and long-term commitment to our region.

Equally important, our awards recognize the next generation of leadership through the AREA Young Professionals 4 Under 40 class, while also honoring excellence in culture, volunteerism, and community development. Whether it’s expanding access to recreation, preserving green spaces, supporting entrepreneurs, or strengthening our workforce, these efforts collectively shape a region where people want to live, work, and play.

The stories we shared at the Annual Awards are not isolated successes. They are markers of sustained regional progress and reminders of what’s possible when we work together with purpose. As we move forward into the months ahead, I’m grateful for the leadership, collaboration, and shared vision that continue to define and strengthen the Ames region.
