This past month has been another strong reminder of the incredible role Iowa State University plays in the life of our community and our regional economy. Few things highlight this better than the national attention Ames received when FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff show came to town for the Cy-Hawk football game. The rivalry between Iowa and Iowa State is always a spirited moment for our state, but the chance to showcase Ames and Iowa State on national television is an invaluable boost. Ames looked terrific on screen, and that kind of exposure shines a light on the energy, pride, and vitality that define our region.
Adding to that momentum, we had the opportunity to welcome John McGivern’s Main Streets crew to Ames, in partnership with Discover Ames, as they filmed an episode for their upcoming season on PBS. Their visit focused on Downtown Ames but also wove in plenty of Iowa State stories and experiences, underscoring just how closely the university and our community are connected. The show will air next spring, offering yet another national platform for people across the country to see what makes the Ames region so special. We were proud to help facilitate their visit and grateful for the spotlight it will bring.
These moments of national visibility are more than just fun headlines. They reflect a deeper truth: when Iowa State thrives, so does the Ames region. From the energy of game day weekends to the steady stream of visitors, students, and families who spend time in our community, the economic impact is significant. Local businesses—from hotels and restaurants to retail shops—benefit directly, while the university’s reputation for excellence continues to attract new talent, innovation, and investment into central Iowa.
Looking ahead, Iowa State University will soon announce its next president, marking the beginning of a new era. Leadership transitions bring both change and opportunity, and we are deeply grateful for the steady and visionary leadership of President Wendy Wintersteen, who has guided the university with distinction and strengthened its impact locally, nationally, and globally. The next president will inherit this strong foundation of excellence and continue shaping not only the university’s future, but also the broader region, as Iowa State remains a key driver of economic growth, cultural vitality, and workforce development.
As we close out September, I am reminded how fortunate we are to have Iowa State University at the heart of our region. Whether it’s through the thrill of a football rivalry, the charm of a national television feature, or the promise of new leadership, the connection between Iowa State and the Ames community is strong and growing. Together, we are building a brighter future for our region—one that continues to shine well beyond central Iowa.
