June 2026 End of Month

End of Month - June 2026

As we close another productive month at the Ames Regional Economic Alliance, I’ve been reflecting on the important role our organization plays in shaping the future of our region.

Earlier this month, members of the Alliance team and regional partners joined Governor Kim Reynolds at the Iowa State Capitol as she signed Senate File 2429 into law. The legislation was one of the Alliance’s public policy priorities this session, and through our contract lobbyist and collaboration with industry stakeholders, we sponsored and helped advance the bill through the legislative process. Seeing it become law was a meaningful reminder that thoughtful advocacy can help deliver real results for our region and the industries that drive our economy.

The new law expands Iowa’s overweight vehicle permit program for trucks transporting fluid milk products, increasing the permitted combined gross vehicle weight limit from 96,000 pounds to 136,000 pounds beginning January 1, 2027. While that may sound like a technical policy change, its impact is significant. The legislation will improve transportation efficiency, reduce costs, and support continued investment in Iowa’s dairy and food production sectors.

For our region, the bill is especially meaningful as we welcome transformational investments such as Daisy Brand’s dairy processing facility in Boone County. Thoughtful public policy can help create the conditions for businesses to grow, invest, and create opportunities throughout the communities we serve.

This also serves as a reminder of the difference between policy and politics. At the Ames Regional Economic Alliance, we remain politically neutral. We do not endorse candidates or political parties. However, we do actively engage in public policy because decisions made at the local, state, and federal levels directly impact economic growth, workforce development, housing, infrastructure, and the overall competitiveness of our region.

That is why we have invested in dedicated public policy expertise on our team. Effective advocacy allows us to bring the voice of our members and communities to the table, identify barriers to growth, and work collaboratively toward solutions that benefit the broader region. Senate File 2429 is a recent example of what can happen when industry leaders, elected officials, and regional stakeholders work together to address a challenge and unlock new opportunities.

As we look ahead, the Alliance will continue to engage on issues that matter to our region, always guided by our mission, informed by our members, and committed to remaining nonpartisan in our approach.
