September End of Month Update

Dan Culhane - President and CEO of Ames Regional Economic Alliance

I recently returned from northern Minnesota where I presented for two days at the Upper Midwest Economic Development Course. I’ve had the honor of presenting there several times over the years and it is always an event that I look forward to. Speaking to emerging economic development leaders from around the Midwest fills my bucket and I admire the enthusiasm I feel from those that attend these courses. I am hopeful that I am inspiring them to go and be great back in their communities and regions, like mentors of mine have done for me in my professional life.

About a month or so prior, we had our regular all-staff meeting. Like most meetings, each of us provided a personal and professional best from the last quarter. As I sat and listened to each team member talk about their work, I was struck by the enthusiasm and passion that resides within our organization. It was clear that each person has molded their role in a way that fits their interests and talents, while also aligning to our core values and mission. As I often say, we run hard, fast, and what seems like in every direction, but we do so to positively impact the businesses, organizations, and communities that we serve.

Perhaps like never before, our team at the Ames Regional Economic Alliance has a buzz around the work we are doing. Last year was a banner year for our organization, and at the time, I never anticipated that 2024 would eclipse that success. I might be wrong. This year, we are doing things that we’ve never done before and that is solely due to the talent and drive of our team.

For many of us, the “back to school” season is so much more than students returning to class. It marks the end of summer and the start of productivity in other ways. Schedules become more hectic, both personally and professionally, and it’s a long push toward a much-needed break in December. Our schedule at the Ames Regional Economic Alliance is no different. I encourage you to engage, be seen, and stay active. Furthermore, I encourage you reflect on your own team and observe the passion that is taking place within your own organization. When I paused for a moment, it struck me instantly.
