As July comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the conversations happening across our community.
Last week, we shared an op-ed, We Owe It to Ourselves to Consider the Opportunity, regarding the possibility of a data center locating in Ames. I knew it might not be a universally popular position, and that’s okay. The purpose wasn’t to advocate for any project at all costs. It was to encourage our community to ask tough questions, examine the facts, and thoughtfully consider opportunities before making decisions.
One point that is clear to me is that no two projects are the same and we must not lose sight of what is directly in front of us. We should resist the temptation to view every opportunity through the same lens. Each proposal deserves its own careful evaluation.
From my perspective, the Ames Regional Economic Alliance has invested significant time over the past several years learning about this industry. We worked collaboratively with the City of Ames on a previous large-scale data center opportunity that ultimately did not move forward, but that experience provided valuable insight into the industry’s infrastructure needs, environmental considerations, and economic impacts. That foundation allows us to ask better questions, better understand both the opportunities and the challenges, and help ensure that proposals receive the thoughtful evaluation they deserve.
Our role at the Ames Regional Economic Alliance is not to support every project. Our role is to help communities make informed decisions that strengthen our regional economy and quality of life. Whether a project ultimately moves forward or not, it should be judged on its own merits, guided by facts, thoughtful analysis, and what’s best for our community.
