Stepping Stones Child Development Center Breaks Ground on New $1.2 Million Facility in Slater, Iowa

Stepping Stones Groundbreaking event in Slater, Iowa

Stepping Stones Child Development Center is excited to announce the groundbreaking ceremony for its new $1.2 million childcare facility, which took place today in Slater. The new center aims to expand access to high-quality early childcare in the community and across the region offering a nurturing and stimulating environment where children can grow, learn, and thrive with a planned opening in Spring 2025.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by parents and children, community leaders, and other residents who praised the initiative as a significant investment in the future of the community. The new facility will accommodate more children and create new job opportunities for early childhood educators and staff while supporting the local economy.

The ceremony was a collaborative effort of over four years of work and involving many funding partners such as the City of Slater, Story County Board of Supervisors, Consumer’s Energy Cooperative and private financing from the owners.

Stepping Stones owner Lizz Umland thanked all the partners that joined their efforts over the years on helping make their dream come to fruition. In turn, Lizz and her husband Mike Umland were praised by Slater Mayor Taylor Christensen and Story County Supervisor Linda Murken on their commitment to see the project succeed and the community investment that will serve vital childcare services in the years to come.
